Almost perfection… The whole story

The creation of this design has come with many challenges, to say the least!

It all started with a name, the “Pistolero”. Pistolero comes from the Spanish word pistol and means gunman or gunfighter. Brainstorming for a theme was the easy part. The real task at hand was the profile design. It had to be a true player that could live up to such a classic tittle.

I try to push the limits of my creativity and the abilities of our machinists with new shapes. My last effort was the Radian Super Light, which presented many challenges in the machining process, but once underway, was a fairly straight forward approach to machining. The Super Light was well received by our community and brought a timeless look to a modern player. Players and collectors are always looking for a piece that sets itself apart form their arsenal of favorite throws, so the new Pistolero had to be unconventional. I wanted it to look different, while maintaining excellent performance – I’ve always intended it to be a player first and a show piece second.

The development of this new shape took considerable effort to find the right balance between uncompromising play versus aesthetics. I wanted to include eye popping engravings on the perimeter, not just for show, but to help hide the many dings that an anodized metal will endure. This throw is meant to be played hard and will only gain character with many battle scars on its rims! Including engravings meant that flat rims would be a necessity and would set the stage for a radical new shape.

The string gap is based on the input of many experienced players – Thanks guys! You’ll find it to be wider than previous SPYYs and the sticker recesses are slightly deeper. No need to shim this one! The result is a gap that can handle a pile of string, is siliconable and accepts many pad options. Please note: A bind return is required once the bearing is broken in – this is not a design for beginners.

The gap profile was given special consideration, as it needed to be a smooth transition to the pronounced flat rims. The result is very organic in feel that fits the hand like nothing SPYY has ever produced. In fact, I like it so much that you may see this gap shape in some future SPYYs!

The bowl/spike region has easily recognizable SPYY features, but six shooter holes were introduced to the spike. The six holes do little for performance, but add to the classic Peacemaker Six Shooter look. The holes presented many issues in the machining/hand finishing processes and may not be present in future runs. People have asked, “Will these holes allow dust and lint into the bearings?”. Nope… SPYY uses top quality shielded EZO bearings. Shields make bearings last longer and keep the dust out of the rolling elements, so please don’t remove them! SPYY specifies a petroleum-based lubricant that can be easily clean out by soaking the bearing in most common solvents… without removing the shields.

The Pistolero’s most significant and eye catching feature is the rotary engraving. The scroll work was captured from an 1873 Colt Peacemaker six shooter, imported into CAD and converted into arcs, curves and splines for CNC machining. The engraving relieves the anodized surface to expose shiny, raw aluminum for a classic hand-tooled look. This process took many, many hours to perfect and the end result is nothing less than stunning!

The ultra matte finish that you’ve come to know in many SPYY releases has been used again on the Pistolero. String wear is always a concern with a bead blasted finish, so each half has been hand buffed in the gap region to eliminate long break in times and string wear. However, the anodizing process did not go without challenges on this run. As many of you may know, anodizing isn’t an exact science and SPYY has experienced inconsistencies in anodizing from various vendors in the past. While dealing with a new vendor, the Pistoleros were over etched to “help make the finish more consistent”, but this resulted in a microscopic loss of material and a looser bearing seat. Unfortunately, this looser bearing seat introduces some minor and very slight vibration to many.

All of the Pistoleros play exceptionally well, have tons of soul and will outperform many metals on the market today, but unfortunately aren’t totally “Saturn Precision Smooth”. Do I allow them to sell for a premium price, knowing that I would prefer them to be smoother (even though most players could care less about “dead smooth”), or do I release them directly to the public at an exceptional price?

The Pistolero has been SPYY’s most involved and largest investment to date… A yoyo with a $125 selling price written all over it. I’ve decided to uphold my standards and maintain SPYY’s commitment to precision and exceptional value, so the Beta Release will be sold direct to customers at a reduced price. I give my apologies to stores that have shown interest in this product – I promise that the next run will be nothing less than a retail success!
