History
The evolution of this new yoyo has come with many challenges, to say the least!

It all started with a name, the “Pistolero”. Pistolero comes from the Spanish word pistol and means gunman or gunfighter. Brainstorming for a theme was the easy part. The real task at hand was the profile design. It had to be a true player that could live up to such a classic tittle.

I try to push the limits of my creativity and the abilities of our machinists with new shapes. My previous challenges include the Radian Super Light and the Pure, which presented many challenges in the machining process. These ground-breaking designs were very well received by our community. They combined unique design elements and stunning looks in a modern player. Players and collectors are always looking for a piece that sets itself apart form their arsenal of favorite throws… the Pistolero had to be unconventional. I wanted it to look different, while maintaining excellent performance – I’ve always intended it to be a player first and a show piece second.

The development of this shape took considerable effort to find the right balance between uncompromising play versus aesthetics. I wanted to include eye popping engravings on the perimeter, not just for show, but to help hide the many dings that an anodized metal will endure. This throw is meant to be played hard and will only gain character with many battle scars on its rims! Including engravings meant that flat rims would be a necessity and would set the stage for a radical new shape.

The string gap is based on the input of many experienced players – Thanks guys! It’s the widest of all SPYYs and the sticker recesses are deep enough to add flowable silicone! The result is a gap that can handle a pile of string and accepts many pad options. Please note: A bind return is required once the bearing is broken in – this is not a yoyo for beginners.

The gap profile was given special consideration, as it needed to be a smooth transition to the pronounced flat rims. The result is very organic in feel that fits the hand like nothing SPYY has ever produced. In fact, I like it so much that you may see this gap shape in some future SPYYs!

The bowl/spike region has easily recognizable SPYY features. The six shooter holes that were present in the Beta Release have been omitted due to the nightmares they caused in the machining process.

The Pistolero’s most significant and eye catching feature is the rotary engraving. The scroll work was captured from an 1873 Colt Peacemaker six shooter, imported into CAD and converted into arcs, curves and splines for CNC machining. The engraving relieves the anodized surface to expose shiny, raw aluminum for a classic hand-tooled look. This process took many, many hours to perfect and the end result is nothing less than stunning!
