Author: SCUBA Steve

Last year we released a limited number of Ronins and received an overwhelming response to its unique shape and stunning graphics. Our team member Ed Haponik did a great job of promoting the yoyo and generated great interest for a re-release.

We are excited to announce that the second release is now shipping to stores in the popular midnight blue, scorched amber, and icy purple colorways. The graphic art, which was heavily influenced by the legendary Hokusai with the Japanese kanji for “Ronin” (or Wave Person… or a school drop-out or even the unemployed !!!!) is unchanged and provides great contrast to the bold colors.
2011 Canadian National Return Top Championships

so i wanted to jot down a few thoughts regarding the recent ’2011 canadian national return top contest’ while it’s still fresh in my mind….
i’ve been to a lot of contests, and some of them bleed together. you see a lot of the same people, and frequently, variations of the same hijinks take place (with some notable, and occasionally frightening exceptions). canadian nats was a more low-key contest, but that’s not meant to take anything away from it. in some ways, the event reminded me of mass states last year, after which john higby cooked me pasta while i played with his little son, t-rocket. the flavor of a contest experience is largely dictated not by the event itself, but by who puts it on, and what takes place around it.

after a fitful, virtually-sleepless night, i awoke at about 4 on thursday to catch my flight. i’ve become an increasingly panicky traveler in recent years, and hate the hurry-up-and-wait process of flying. with all my necessities in a backpack, i got through security in a blur and was at my gate a solid 2 hours before boarding time. mercifully, an earlier [empty] flight was just leaving, and i squeaked on, relieved at bypassing such a long wait in the terminal (and blissfully ignoring the fact that the same wait would meet me at my connection). when i finally got to calgary, customs was perfectly polite, but they seemed unable to believe that i would pack only 3 t-shirts and changes of underwear for a 4-day trip. somebody needs to instruct these guys on the virtues of denim. you can wear it every day! read the rest

WCR, the first regional contest in western Canada
Author: SCUBA Steve
The Western Canadian Regional (WCR), was held near Vancouver Saturday, May 21. As far as I know, it was the first Canadian regional yoyo contest and a very successful one at that! The contest was sponsored by numerous yoyo companies with many prizes. Judges were sitting in front of the stage, and the stage was large with loud speakers at each end and a big poster showing the sponsors – just like any other great yoyo contest. From the beginning to the end, it went great.

Many of the competitors were from the Vancouver area. They have their own local yoyo group, and the size of it seems to be big enough that they can organize a contest with some supporters. Some of yoyoers possess significant potential in their yoyoing. It just made me interested in them because I always want to see good yoyoers in Canada, but this country is really huge and makes hard to gather those people in a single place. It appeared obvious that there are many unknown, yet intense players in this great country, but they wouldn’t have any opportunity to show their ability to the bigger community if they live in a place without any local yoyo meeting or contest. The Radian Gen 2 is a long awaited re-release of the throw that established SPYY’s place in the market. This is a modernized version, but remains true to the original with its classic profile and spike. The performance on the string lives up to expectations of modern players with a revised gap and response system.
